55 Comparison of the Blood Pressure Measurement Results Using Mercury Sphygmomanometer and Oscillometric Sphygmomanometer

Background: Hypertension plays a role in 45% of deaths from heart disease and 51% of deaths from stroke. Accurate blood pressure measurements are needed to diagnose and control hypertension. Until now, there is still a debate about the accuracy of several types of sphygmomanometer. Objective: The aim of this study is to observe systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) measurement differences using the oscillometric sphygmomanometer as compared to the mercury sphygmomanometer. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 66 elderly subjects in November 2015 using the simple random sampling method. This study was carried out in Purbo Yuwono Health Service Unit, Brebes. SBP and DBP measurements of each subject were performed using mercury and oscillometric sphygmomanometer. Data was analyzing by unpaired T-test. Result: Of the 66 elderly subjects, the mean blood pressure readings by the mercury sphygmomanometer is 146.79 ± 26.85 mmHg in SBP and 77.02 ± 13.12 mmHg in DBP. The mean blood pressure readings by the oscillometric sphygmomanometer is 147.76 ± 26.58 mmHg in SBP and 78.5 ± 15.38 mmHg in DBP. There are no significant differences in mean blood pressure readings, both SBP and DBP (p > 0.05) in both measurement method. Conclusion: In elderly subject of this study, we observe no difference in mean blood pressure measurement using mercury sphygmomanometer and oscillometric sphygmomanometer.
