Biogeographia vol. In the Marches it is distributed almost exclusively in the highlands and on the lower slopes of mountainous areas. According to the available data, B. /I/If/J_)'JDIlS is present in 25 out of the 130 UTM grid squares which cover the entire Marches region (19.2% of the sample). Most records refer to altitudes between 400 and 800 m asl; reproductive sites include streams (19 sites, 44% of the sample), puddles (11 — 25.5%), drinking troughs (9 — 21%) and ponds (4 — 9.3%). The reproductive season starts in April/May and may continue until October. The species, listed in Annexes H and IV of the Habitat Directive and in the Annex II of the Berna Convention, is very sparsely distributed in the region, with small isolated populations. B. pat/Jypi/5 is threatened especially by man—made modification undertaken in the management and use of the territory: the main threats encountered in the Marches are the destruction of reproductive habitats, spring capping and drought. These problems call for urgent actions to plan an interregional/national program of conservation strategies and to increase long—term monitoring projects and the availability of breeding sites.
