Purpose: Adjuvant therapies, in particular anthracyclines (A) and trastuzumab (H), have improved disease-free survival and overall prognosis in patients with breast cancer. Yet, this benefit occurs at expenses of higher risk of cardiotoxicity. We sought to: (1) study the evolution of left ventricular function and dimension indices during A and H therapies; (2) assess the incidence and possible factors associated with therapy-induced cardiotoxicity (TIC). Methods: Retrospective study of patients with first non-metastatic breast cancer treated with A and/or H between Mar 2010 and Nov 2015 who underwent a comprehensive echocardiographic examination before and after chemotherapy and quarterly during H therapy. Patients with baseline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <50%, severe valvular heart disease or prosthetic valves were excluded. TIC was defined as a decrease in the LVEF >10% from baseline or LVEF<53%. Results: One hundred and six patients were included, all female and with median age of 54±13 years. Chemotherapy regimens included both A and H in 51 (48.1%) patients, H in 12 (11.3%) patients and A in 43 (40.6%) patients.
