Biodiversity assessment of Mt.Makiling Forest Reserve [Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines]
Résumé fourni par la source
Mount Makiling has diverse and unique ecosystems that serve as habitats for many organisms that need to be conserved and managed. This study assessed the microbial, floral and faunal biodiversity of Mt. Makiling using various survey techniques and created an online biodiversity database.Three actinomycete families, 27 filamentous fungi genera, nine algae species, 24 moss species, 45 pteridophyte species, 101 understorey plant species, 15 land snail species, seven amphibian species, three reptile species, 46 bird species and 11 mammal species were identified along elevational gradients of the UPLB Forestry slope on the northeastern side of Mt. Makiling. Additionally, eight actinomycete isolates showed inhibitory activity against Bacillus cereus. Eighteen colonies and nesting sites of Apis breviligula were also determined. Many endemic and threatened plants and animals were recorded in this study. The most notable are the fern species Oleandra maquilingensis, which can only be found in Mt. Makiling, and the Luzon Bleeding-heart Pigeon (Gallicolumba luzonica), a cryptic bird which is classified as near Threatened and is endemic only to Luzon Island. Makiling Biodiversity Database (MAKIBIS) was also created as a biodiversity database information system with an organized collection of valuable information regarding the biology and ecology of microbial, floral and faunal species of Mt. Makiling. It is recommended that actinomycete isolates gathered in this study be further classified and analyzed for their antibacterial properties. Studies should also delved into the genetic diversity, population estimates, range and distribution of important species. More information on the biodiversity of Mt. Makiling should also be added to MAKIBIS.
