Sleep Disorders
Le résumé fourni par la source
Difficulties obtaining the proper quantity and quality of sleep are part of the human condition. Insomnia as a disorder is characterized by difficulty initiating and/or maintaining sleep that causes significant distress and daytime impairment. In order to meet the diagnostic criteria for insomnia, patients must report some difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep and must experience clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning. Insomnia is a highly prevalent and debilitating disease affecting approximately 30% of the population, and it is one that is associated with significant impairments to an individual's quality of life. Concurrent with the synthesis of the first benzodiazepines, the cognitive revolution spurred interest into research and implementation of cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) for various psychological disorders. Melatonin activity represents another potential target for inducing sleepiness. Depression and insomnia frequently co-occur; the diagnostic criteria for depression includes sleep disturbance as a possible symptom.
