COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF MACULAR THICKNESS AFTER PHACOEMULSIFICATION VS. MANUAL SICS BY OCULAR COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY IN DIABETIC PATIENTS

BACKGROUND \nThe aim of the study is to evaluate the change in macular thickness by optical coherence tomography after uncomplicated \nphacoemulsification versus uncomplicated manual SICS in known diabetic patients. \nMATERIALS AND METHODS \nThe study was done at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. Total sample size \nwas 50. Patients were randomised into two groups- 25 in phaco group and 25 in SICS group. \nRESULTS \nHigher rise in Mean Central Foveal Thickness (MCFT) was noted in SICS group throughout the follow up. Significant difference \nin MCFT between phaco and SICS group was noted on 3 \nrd \nday, 7 \nth \nday, 3 \nrd month and 6 month follow up. Clinically, significant \nmacular oedema was not found at any point of time in any patient during this study. \nCONCLUSION \nSignificant higher macular thickness was observed in SICS group as compared to phaco group, so we should be more cautious \nto undertake SICS in those patients who are at risk of developing CME or who have a higher macular thickness as seen in \ndiabetic patients.
