During the 1990s, the city of Geneva experienced one of the largest “squatter” movements in Europe, one that was proportionately comparable to what was happening in cities like Berlin or Amsterdam.1 This movement drew its strength and legitimacy from a whole series of “urban conflicts” that began in the 1970s. Today, however, very few occupied sites remain in Geneva as most of them have been shut down over a period of ten years. What has happened, then, to the criticisms and hopes that sustained these conflicts?
