POPULASYON NG PINAS, PATAAS NANG PATAAS: AN ACTIVITY ON POPULATION DYNAMICS FOR GRADE 10 STUDENTS

A lot of studies proved the effectiveness of activity-based learning and consructivist approach in teaching science. The study was intended to create the Populasyon ng Pinas, Pataas nang Pataas: An Activity on Population Dynamics for Grade 10 Students.  The activity has characteristics of 1) promoting active learning of population dynamics to Grade 10 Filipino students 2) raising awareness about Philippines as a populous country and the real-case scenarios behind it, and 3) promoting group dynamics, interactivity and team work.The activity was pre-tested on 40 UPLB students currently enrolled in BIO 150, Principles of Ecology. Seventy-one Grade 10 students of Christian School International (CSI) participated in the activity. Questionnaires were administered then to evaluate the activity in terms of content, design, facilitator and materials used. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the students’ feedback. The results­­­ revealed that the activity 1) promoted active learning as majority of the students strongly agreed (98.59 %) that they learned concepts of population dynamics actively through the activity 2) raised students’ awareness about the Philippines as a populous country and the real-case scenarios regarding this as majority of the students strongly agreed (92.96 %), and 3) promoted group dynamics, interactivity and team work as majority of the students strongly agreed (92.96 %). The created activity “Populasyon ng Pinas, Pataas nang Pataas” can be a potential teaching and learning tool on population dynamics in the Philippine setting.
