The Archival Life of Early Color Films

In the following pages i will discuss the restoration and presentation practices of color in early films as they have evolved in the last three decades. i will address and illustrate, in particular, the consequences of the digital shift on the archival life of early color films. with the so-called digital shift, new forms of (online) access and alternative ways for film presentation are being explored. as i will argue, the illustrative form of this book can be included in these new forms of presentation: single, enlarged, still, colored frames that in the past were only accessible to film archivists and historians are chosen and presented here to allow a broader audience to experience early color films through high resolution scans from the original colored film frames. this form of presentation represents a new turn in their “archival life.”
