This chapter draws together the material presented in anaesthetic equipment and anaesthetic pharmacology, to help the new anaesthetist put this knowledge into clinical practice. Topics include the assessment of a patient for anaesthesia, the investigations to consider, and the examination of the patient’s airway. The anaesthetic is broken down into stages, and checklists are introduced to help the trainee develop a comprehensive plan for the anaesthetic, and example cases are presented. The role of the anaesthetic assistant and the importance of good communication are described. A selection of self-assessment questions is provided at the end of the chapter.
