Poverty and the distribution of ecosystem services

This chapter examines how the emerging field of mapping and modelling ecosystem services and poverty can help identify the links between ecosystem conditions and human conditions. It reviews the literature on various links between the poor and the environment, and then establishes three key conditions that must be met for mapping and modelling exercises to be useful in decision-making: (i) the resolution of both poverty and ecosystem service information is sufficient to represent patterns in each accurately; (ii) the poverty indicators chosen are well matched with the ecosystem service(s) of concern; and (iii) the institutions which control the provision of services are represented. The chapter then discusses the feasibility of meeting these conditions today, and demonstrates the state of the science with case studies from the Amazon Basin and Guatemala.
