availability of food for the newly released young. Subsequently, Steele & Steele (1975) showed that the release of young by marine Gammarus species in the northwestern Atlantic coincided with the growth of fine ephemeral algae in the intertidal region, and they suggest that the availability of such algae was the ultimate factor determining the timing of the reproductive cycle in these species, since natural selection would ensure that the young were produced in the optimum season of the year. The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that the survival of young Gammarus would be best on a diet of fine algae and to observe the effects that diet might have on experimental animals.
