Routine induction of general anaesthesia

This chapter describes the sequence of events in preparing the anaesthetic room and the steps required to safely induce general anaesthesia in an appropriately fasted patient. A suggested ‘menu’ of drugs to prepare is presented. The anaesthetic is also broken down into three stages: induction, maintenance, and emergence. At each step, the actions required of the anaesthetist are described, along with checks that need to be performed. A selection of self-assessment questions is provided at the end of the chapter.
