Effect of Hemin on focal ischemic brain tissues of rats

Objective To investigate the effect and possible mechanisms of Hemin on focal ischemic brain tissues. Methods Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: sham-operation control group, operation group and Hemin treatment group. Twenty-four hours after focal cerebral ischemia, the brain water content, infarcted tissue volume, neuropathologic changes and immunocytochemical expression of neuroglobin (Ngb) were examined. Results There was significant difference in brain water content and the infracted tissue volume between operation group and Hemin treatment group (P0.05)). Neuropathologic examination showed that there were fewer necrotic neurons, milder edema and more pronounced Ngb expression in the Hemin treatment group than the operation group. Conclusion Hemin may probably be beneficial to the protection of focal cerebral ischemia through inducing the expression of neuroglobin.
