Bacterial studies on debris taken from the gingival sulcus of man

The gingival sulcus micro-ecology of three categories \nof people was studied. Samples of debris were removed \nfrom the gingival sulcus of ten male Bantu \nsubjects with pockets of 1 - 2 mm, ten male Bantu subjects \nwith pockets of 3 - 6 mm and twenty male Caucasian \nsubjects with pockets of 1 — 2 mm. The samples \nwere placed in cooked meat medium which was incubated \nat 37°C for thirty days. They were plated out daily \nfrom the cooked meat onto a variety of media. Organisms \ncultured were identified to the genus level. \nChanges in the pH and amino acids in the medium were \nstudied in ten of the samples taken from the Bantu \nsubjects. Organisms isolated were classified as \ndominants, associates and incidentals. Dominants were \nstable, had a high incidence and persisted in the \nmedium. They included the aerobic streptococci, \nactinomyces,C(-haemol'/tic streptococci, mitis-type \nstreptococci and the enterococci. Associates were not \nstable or did not survive well and could be divided \ninto five groups. The first group consisted of the \nveillonella, lactobacilli, -haemolytic streptococci \nand the sarcina. They were favoured by deep pockets. \nThe second group was favoured by shallow pockets and \nthe environment of the Bantu and consisted of the \nanaerobic streptococci, staphylococci, bacteroides, \nneisseria, selenomonas, fusobacteria, diplococci, \nClostridia, loptotrichia and polysaccharide-producing \nstreptococci.
