STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR SOCIETY

trategic planning for the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) has two goals: to prepare a long-term strategic plan to guide the direction and future of ComSoc and to organize discussion of solutions for shortterm challenges in specific areas identified by ComSoc’s volunteer leaders, Board of Governors or the Strategic Planning Committee itself. Strategic planning is crucial when the Society reaches a turning point or when it faces unexpected barriers. We perceive that ComSoc has reached such a turning point and must transform its organization and operation to align with the megatrends of the new Internet-driven world economy. In this new world, the traditional telco-driven communication industry is overtaken by an Internet-driven converged industry and the U.S.-centric world economy is converted to a multi-centric global economy. In the near term, ComSoc is still in the shadow of the 2008 world economic downturn, which continues to pressure the finances of the Society.
