Annual Report on the Status of the Artisanal Seine Net Fishery of Rodrigues 2005

As a continuation of a monitoring programme started in 2002, catch assessments were made by Shoals Rodrigues staff during the seine net open season between 1st March and 30th September 2004. Seine net teams from Port Sud Est, Pointe L’Aigle, Baie du Nord and Pointe Corail were followed during the course of a fishing day. The time and position of each haul was recorded and all fish caught were transferred to the survey boat where the species and total length of each individual was determined. 17,676 individuals were landed, with a total weight of 4,641 kg. The catches comprised of 77 fish species. The most important species within the catch was the Rabbitfish (Cordonnier) Siganus sutor. Convict Surgeonfish (Lorsan) Acanthurus triostegus, Mojarra (Breton) Gerres longirostris, Goatfish (Rouget), Mulloidichthys flavolineatus and the Silver Moony (Lune) Monodactylus argenteus were also important components of seine net catches. Comparisons with catch statistics from 2002-2005 show that S. sutor remained the most important species in all 5 years, however there was a change in species composition of the catch with previously unimportant species such as M. argenteus, S. argenteus and Albula glossodonta becoming important in 2006, whereas species such as Lethrinus nebulosus, Naso unicornis and
