Impact of Wind Energy Generation on the Safety of the Electrical Transmission Network

The installed power of wind farms in the Spanish network has reached a significant level, and forecasts indicate a spectacular increase in the next few years. The special nature of this means of generating electricity makes it advisable to evaluate its impact on the operation of the national grid, especially with regard to security of supply. With this in mind, a study of the behaviour of the grid in fault conditions, using different levels of wind penetration, has been carried out, determining in each case whether the situation is acceptable from the point of view of Power System security. The model includes the effects of the type of wind turbine used and the operation of grid protection systems, as well as the response of the system interconnected with the UCTE. In this way we can establish limits of wind penetration into the Spanish electrical system so that security of supply does not diminish with respect to its present level.
