Wear Behavior of Chilled Aluminium Alloy-Kaolinite/Carbon Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites

Abstract — This paper describes the fabrication and testing, mechanical properties and wear behavior of Al alloy/kaolinite/C hybrid mmcs cast using cryogenically cooled copper chills. The size of the kaolinite/graphitic carbon particles ranges from 50 to 100 µm and the content by weight ranges from 3 % to 12 % in steps of 3%. The carbon (graphitic carbon) content was kept constant at 2.5%. Dry slide wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disc wear testing machine. Ingots were cast under vortex route method employing copper chills of different thickness to study the effect of volumetric heat capacity (VHC) of the chill on ultimate tensile strength (UTS), hardness, wear behavior, and microstructure of the composite. Nickel coating is given on graphite particles through electroless process. This helps to bind low density graphite particles strongly with base metal
