Search for the Lepton-Flavor-Violating Decay τ−→μ−η at Belle

We have searched for the lepton flavor violating decay ${\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\eta}$ using a data sample of $84.3\text{ }{\mathrm{f}\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ accumulated with the Belle detector at KEK. The $\ensuremath{\eta}$ meson was detected through the decay modes: $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$. No signal candidates are found, and we obtain an upper limit for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\eta})<3.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$ at the 90% confidence level.
