Soil moi sture assimilation in a coupled water/energy scheme in a semiarid region is investigated using the Ensemble Kalman Filter theory. The method is used to improve the model estimates but also to account for the seasonal evolution of the hydrologically active soil depth. It is shown that this method significantly improves the soil water content predictions and the daily stream flows estimates.
