Mηδέν άγαν (Nothing in excess!) Inscription at the temple of Apollo in Delphi "Hypersymbiosis" is a poor word for a clearly defined phenomenon: a symbiosis between mother and child which is excessive and unduly prolonged. To think about this problem was occasioned by a recent experience. I was called to a 2¾-year-old girl with a febrile illness. The grandmother of this child is an analyst. The girl's mother had been analyzed three times during the past 10 years but still appeared to be neurotic. When she had her first child, she naturally tried to let the baby benefit from her knowledge and gains resulting from so much expenditure of time and money. She breast-fed the girl up to one year, using a self-demand schedule in its extremes. She was constantly with her baby and anxiously tried to avoid any frustration.
