We assessed the impact of a short (group A: 2 weeks) compared to a long (group B: 6 weeks) indwelling time on functional outcome and provide our preliminary long term data. METHODS Prospective randomized single surgeon (PZ) series including 66 patients (group A: 31, group B: 35) who underwent minimally invasive dismembered pyeloplasty from 2007 to 2012 at our institution. Preoperatively, baseline split kidney function (scintigraphy) was assessed in all patients. Routinely, retrograde examination with consecutive DJ (4.8 Charr/French, Percuflex Plus Ureteral Stent with HydroPlus™ Coating , Boston Scientific) placement was performed immediately prior to pyeloplasty. The evaluation of functional outcome based on objective (diuretic renography at 3 months, renal scintigraphy at 6, 24, 60 months) and subjective findings (flank pain). Patients with missing functional studies were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed with Fisher-test. RESULTS Median follow up was 23 months (range 3-60) in group A and 23 months (range 3-60 ) in group B. Postoperatively, diuretic renography at 3 months showed good drainage in 100 % of patients from either group. Renal scintigraphy detected improved drainage in 96% (23/24) of patients at 6 months and 100% (15/15) of patients at 24 months in group A compared to 100% (28/28) of patients and 100% (17/17) of patients in group B, respectively (p=0.9383, p=1). Subjectively, 97% (30/31) of patients in group A compared to 100% (35/35) of patients in group B were free of symptoms at last follow up (p= 0.9631). CONCLUSIONS Our preliminary long term data suggest that 2 weeks stenting provides similarly excellent functional outcomes compared to 6 weeks stenting in patients undergoing minimally invasive dismembered pyeloplasty.
