Effect of Xiphinema diversicaudatum on the growth of four seedling grasses

SUMMARY In pot experiments in a glasshouse, nematode numbers equivalent to 1000 Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Micol.) Thome per litre of soil produced extensive galling on roots of seedling perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. Roots of cocksfoot and timothy had significantly fewer galls. At 1000 X. diversicaudatum per litre of, soil, the maximum root length in ryegrass, tall fescue and cocksfoot was significantly less, by 28, 25 and 22 per cent respectively, than in the uninoculated plants, and ryegrass and tall fescue had significantly fewer crown roots than the controls. The effects on shoot growth were small.
