The Effects of a Heavy Snowfall on Emergency Services in a District General Hospital: What we can Learn

In early February 2009, most of the UK experienced the heaviest snowfall in 18 years. This was preceded by the coldest winter since 1995–1996, with an average temperature of 2.9°C. South-east England, where our hospital is located, experienced snow depths of 15–30cm on 1–2 February followed by windy, icy and snowy conditions that continued until the second half of the month. The effect of the weather was compounded by the nation's salt shortage for gritting, which meant that suburban streets and quiet rural roads were often neglected in favour of major roads.
