To the Editor.— Two years ago, Dr. Richard A. Kern, President of the International Society of Internal Medicine announced that the Society's 12th biennial Congress would be held in Boston in September 1972. With the sponsorship of the American College of Physicians and under the direction of Dr. Thomas Warthin, arrangements were made for an excellent program. Now, cancellation of the Congress has been reported. The number of advance registrations and the available financial resources were considered too small to warrant the event. In recent decades, and especially since World War II, international medical meetings have proliferated. Individual physicians and national medical societies have attempted to promote direct worldwide communication. The increasing numbers of congresses, conferences, and seminars with participants from an increasing number of countries appeared to indicate their continuing success.
