Abstract Despite some exceptions, such as the recent Socialist victory in France, over the last few years the Left has been badly defeated almost everywhere — from China to the United States and England. Even in Latin America and Poland, where there has been considerable social unrest, it is not the historical Left but rather other social agencies, such as the Catholic Church, that have provided the moral strength and political commitment necessary to sustain the challenge. Discredited mostly everywhere, the Left has only been able to mount a weak resistance to the growing impact of the Moral Majority, Muslim fundamentalism or their functional equivalents.
