Background : Cardiac dysfunction is a major cause of death in β -thalassemia ( β -Thal) patients. The progression of cardiac complications was associated with serum ferritin measures above 2500 μ g/L Objective : to assess echocardiographic findings in β -Thalassemia patients with high serum ferritin level (equal to or above 2,500 μ g/L). Methodology : A cross-sectional study was conducted at Chiang Rai Hospital. Data collection was retrospectively done during January 2006 - June 2010. Characteristics of (-Thalassemia patients with and without high serum ferritin level were compared. Echocardiographic findings associated with high serum ferritin level (> 2,500 (g/L) were identified with logistic regression analysis. Results : A total of 181 patients were included: 144 E/ β -Thal and 37 homozygous β -Thal. The patients with higher serum ferritin level (> 2,500 (g/L) was detected in 88 (48.62%) patients. In a multivariable analysis, echocardiographic finding significantly associated with the patients with higher serum ferritin level was pulmonary arterial hypertension (Odds Ratio 2.09[1.07 - 4.06]). Conclusions : According to echocardiographic finding, the high serum ferritin increased risk of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
