ABET criteria 2000: Where are the criteria?
Le résumé fourni par la source
For many years the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation criteria for engineering programs changed very little. Recently, there has been a major change in these criteria, which is intended to provide engineering programs with more flexibility in the hope that they can adapt rapidly to meet the increasing number and rate of technological changes being faced by industry. However, the new ABET 2000 accreditation criteria are much less specific than earlier criteria. This has led to concern among academics over the adequacy of the criteria and over the preparation appropriate for an upcoming ABET visit during which the new criteria will be used for evaluation. During the fall of 1996, the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas, as part of the ABET Criteria 2000 Pilot Program, was one of the first two engineering programs to be evaluated using the new criteria. The purpose of this paper is to convey a small portion of what was learned during that experience along with some speculative interpretation of possible results of using these new criteria in the future.
