Observation of B→φK and B→φK*

We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of $B$ mesons into the final states $\ensuremath{\varphi}K$ and $\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{*}$. Using 9.7 million $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{*0}$ with the following branching fractions: $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({5.5}_{\ensuremath{-}1.8}^{+2.1}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ and $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{*0})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({11.5}_{\ensuremath{-}3.7\ensuremath{-}1.7}^{+4.5+1.8})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$. We also see evidence for the decays ${B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{0}$ and ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\varphi}{K}^{*\ensuremath{-}}$. However, since the statistical significance is not overwhelming for these modes, we determine upper limits of $<12.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ and $<22.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ ( $90%$ confidence level), respectively.
