In this study we present a proposal for a classification of Spanish idiomatic phrasal units according to the role that these polylexemes play within longer textual units (syntagm, sentence or text). At the same time, we establish criteria to justify such a classification and, to do so, we pay special attention to the commutability of the phrases. Apart from the traditionally accepted categories (nominal, adjectival, prepositional, adverbial, conjunctive, interjectory and verbal), we also consider it essential to introduce the categories of connective and sentential phrases. Additionally, we experiment with other categories like pragmatic formulae and phrases that correspond to subordinate clauses. Our opinions about the function and use of the phrases are backed up with genuine examples found on the Internet.
