Is zero discharge a viable or useful concept in mine water management

Increasingly the community and government regulators are calling for ‘zero discharge’ mines. Some mining companies are beginning to explore ways in which they can transition to zero discharge. When striving to attain zero discharge, mines must consider multiple variables in addition to water quantity. These include climate regime, water quality and regional water budgets. This paper explores the drivers behind the concept of zero discharge mines and will use examples to illustrate the feasibility of attaining this goal.
